Loyalty doesn’t always pay when it comes to
business gas, so sticking with the same supplier isn’t usually the best option. Here are
three key reasons why thousands of businesses compare gas prices and switch suppliers
with Bionic:
Avoid Overpaying with Out-of-Contract Rates - If your business gas bill suddenly
spikes, you might be on out-of-contract rates. Switching sooner can help lower your
monthly costs. And if you’d rather not switch, we may be able to negotiate a better deal
with your current supplier.
Secure Lower Rates for Longer – We don’t just focus on price; we find the best
option for your business. Locking in a lower rate for a longer term can provide
stability and peace of mind in an unpredictable market.
Reliable, Trusted Suppliers – No one wants the stress of their gas supplier going
out of business. We work with a panel of trusted suppliers who offer competitive rates
and dependable service. Plus, we’ll handle the switch so you can stay focused on running
your business.
When comparing business gas, you’ll come across various tariff options. Bionic’s tech-enabled experts will guide you through your choices to help you secure the best deal. Here are the main types of gas tariffs available for SMEs.
Your unit rate and standing charges remain the same for the entire duration of your contract, providing price stability and predictable costs.
Your unit rate and standing charges can change throughout your contract, depending on market conditions, offering potential savings.
Your energy costs are lower during specific off-peak hours and higher during peak times, making this ideal for your businesses to grow.
These are the default rates your supplier will charge if you don’t secure a fixed contract before moving into new premises. It’s best to avoid them.
In business gas, your usage determines the size of your business. To give you a clearer idea of what you should be paying, here are the latest business gas prices per kWh and standing charges for March 2025. We’ve also included the average annual bill size for easy comparison.

If your business consumes more than 65,000 kWh of gas annually, suppliers will classify you as a large
business and manage your supply differently. For more details, check out our guide to large business
energy or call us at 0800 077 4064.
If your gas bills are too high, an expensive
tariff may not be the only reason—you could simply be using more energy than necessary.
This might be due to inefficient habits, such as keeping the heating too high, or
because your business premises aren’t as energy-efficient as they should be.
To give you a general idea of expected usage, here are the average annual gas
consumption figures for SMEs:
Microbusinesses: (fewer than 10 employees and an annual turnover under €2
million) typically use 10,000 kWh of gas per year. Learn more in our guide to
microbusiness energy.
Small businesses: (fewer than 50 employees and an annual turnover under €10
million) use an average of 25,000 kWh per year. Read more in our UK small business
guide.

Your Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN) is a unique identifier for your gas
meter, consisting of up to 11 digits. It is used to distinguish your meter
at your business premises.
You can find your MPRN on your business gas bill under the "Details of
charges" section.
Alternatively, you can locate it by:
Entering your postcode on the Find My Supplier website.
Calling the Meter Number Helpline at 0870 608 1524. Provide your business
postcode and address, and they’ll inform you of your MPRN and current gas
supplier.
If you have a standard gas meter, it's unlikely that it will need replacing. However, if you have a smart meter, you may need to switch meters if your current one isn't compatible with your new supplier. For more details, check out our guide to smart meters for business.
Most businesses are charged the standard 20% VAT on gas. However, you may be eligible for the reduced 5% rate if you operate as a charity or a not-for-profit organization. Additionally, businesses using less than 4,397 kWh per month may also qualify for a lower VAT rate. If you're unsure about your usage, check your latest bill for exact figures. If you meet the criteria, you can request a VAT declaration form from your gas supplier. Learn more in our guide to VAT for business gas and electricity.
Even if your gas is supplied by an Independent Gas Transporter (IGT), you can still compare prices and switch suppliers. However, the process may take longer, and the deals available might not be as competitive. This is because IGT supply and maintenance costs are higher, often leading to increased standing charges. Additionally, when comparing gas quotes, IGT-related charges aren’t included, so you’ll need to factor them in separately. To get the best deal, it’s important to compare offers from multiple suppliers, as some larger providers may absorb the IGT charges to win your business.
Business gas prices fluctuate constantly, so the best way to secure a great deal is by comparing prices and switching when necessary. To avoid potential price hikes, consider signing up for a new contract as soon as your switching window opens—this can help you lock in lower rates and stay ahead of any increases.
